Nova Art Documentary
What is the "NOVA" documentary about?
The documentary is about multiple young artists, sharing and discussing about how they have developed their personal take on modern art styles, as individuals, all edited into a video.
My response of the video:
After just viewing the documentary for a few seconds at the beginning (with the introduction) my first initial response was confusion to what I was about to watch. It was a black screen with a movement of white figurative lines traveling and changing to introduce the documentary. I couldn't really figure out what I was expecting.
As the video continued, I started to understand the format of the documentary and the layout of how the artists work would be displayed and also including the input from the creators themselves, discussing their purpose and how they percieve modern art to be.
Some artists I didn't really like, such as the animated pieces, as of the visuals made me feel uncomfortable to view. Some of the messages from the pieces where just difficult to watch as of the uncoomfortable topics the work was based on. I appreciated the artistry and how the individuals had created their own individual style, as that is difficult and time consuming to do, however in my opinion I just didn't like the visual and final pieces.
"NOVA" was intresting as using the documentary as a way to showcase the work and thought processes of the artists to how they create art. There was a few reoccuring themes and interpretations of modern art throughout the video which were:
- Describing modern art to be a fusion between art, science and technology
- Non traditional style (unlike a traditional style of art where usually someone would paint a figurative piece on a canvas)
- Uniqueness and individualality
- Some describe modern art to be a fusion between art, science and technology
- Being an artist is about business, not just being "lucky" or "talented"
Overall inspiration from the documemtary:
From viewing the whole video, and taking notes throughout, I defienatly learned and discovered more insights to multiple different opinions of what art is, how to create a personal style and signature without physically signing a name. Also using medias I had never even concidered using before such as tape in a range of bright and bold colours, and the use of new technology using a protector to add a change in a visual piece.
Before wathcing the docuentary, I wanted to include more photography and video recordings into my work. From watching how some artists used technology to advance their work, this was something I was definately inspired to try out for myself, which I could continue to discuss on my blog.
Another benefit from viewing the "NOVA" documentary was that I had noted down so many different artists which I could use to help kick start off my artist research and other influences I could look at to develop my own personal investigation. For example, Flippo Minelli's "FUTURE" piece fit my theme of "Creation and Destruction". Viewing the performative piece of the words of "future" burn, from the use of fire, was something I found to be really effective to portray a strong and powerful message. As I continue with my personal investigation, their work is somewhere I really want to research into.
